"Great for my 4 year old who loves going to Little Dragons. You can see he listens better after going to class and loves learning. He calls the class his "kung fu Panda" class."

About Lil'Dragon's Classes & Children's Martial Arts

Lil'Dragon's teaches more than martial arts. It teaches children to be good citizens and to prepares them for life, or at least school. It includes units on safety and life skills. These help the students become well rounded by developing the child's social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth.

The Martial Arts element is non-contact for this age group, but there is still lots of pad-work using specially designed soft pads so that they can kick and punch and learn to co-ordinate their left from right and develop their motor skills.

Alongside the physical aspect of the class there is also circle time in which the children engage in a particular topic over a period of six weeks and revolves around an essential life skill which are described in our typical class below...

A Typical Lil'Dragon's Class

Entering a Lil'Dragon's Class for the first time is very exciting, firstly your child is introduced to 'Sir' or 'Miss' who will be their instructor for the class. Then it's shoes and socks off and straight onto the protective mats where the instructor will buddy up your child with regular members of the class of a similar age so that they can instantly feel comfortable.

We respect of course that for the first class parents will want to stay and watch their child and seating is provided but we do strongly emphasise to try and be very much in the background as our experience is that without their parents children concentrate much better!

Warm-up exercises begin after paying 'respects to the dojo' and reciting the Lil'Dragon's creed. All Lil'Dragon's must learn the words and actions for this and it is a great way to help them get into the correct mindset for the techniques to follow.

At this level, children are expected to learn basic blocks, punches and kicks all of which are done on soft pads, never on each other! and it is instilled from day one that what they are learning is a sport, and not something to be used in the playground. Like lots of Martial Arts clubs there is also the opportunity to grade and be given a coloured belt as you progress through the techniques. Grading happens approximately every 4 months and is part of the lesson plan and although it is optional we encourage all children to give it a go as it is a great way to see how your child's skills are progressing.

Children's Martial Arts Classes can be very noisy, and we encourage it! That's because the noise should come from them all sounding their 'keei' a noise that is made when they conduct any technique. This shows commitment to the technique and you will be surprised how at first many children may be a bit shy to do this but a few weeks their confidence has already grown enough to be fully engaged.

Another important and we think unique aspect of our Lil'Dragon's Classes is Circle Time. Every other week children are given homework on a particular topic and their circle time activities and homework all go towards a simple summary or test where they can earn a badge to sew on their uniform, very much like Cubs or Beavers.
