About our Kickboxing Classes
Kickboxing is a modern Martial Art and so incorporates lots of different techniques from Kung Fu, Boxing, Aikido, Self Defence and more.
Everyone who comes to a kickboxing class has a different reason for doing so, whether it is to get fit, gain confidence or learn to defend yourself, Kickboxing is a great way to meet new people and have fun while you kick and punch them!
At holistic fitness all classes are run on a safety first basis and we strongly believe in respect for one another. As a result we always welcome absolute beginners to our adult kickboxing class from ages 13+. The class is a genuine mix of male and female and of all shapes, sizes and fitness level. We do however mix up our classes so that beginners get to train, spar and learn from more advanced pupils. We also ensure every pupil gets individual attention and encouragement.
If you want to know more you can read about a typical class below, alternatively you can book a trial class online now.
With three different Kickboxing classes to choose from every week they do vary in style and our best advice would always be to just come and give it a go! But all classes do have a structure.
For Example, Tuesdays Kickboxing class is a sparring class taught by Holistic Fitness Owner Stephen Dixon. After lining up, like many martial arts we have a ‘respects’ stance, get into ready stance and then the warm-up begins.
The warm up is based around simple ‘old-school’ exercises such as press-ups, sit ups and cat dips. Some gentle running on the spot and a series of kicks and ballistic stretches ensure that everyone is prepared for the next stage of the class. Don’t worry if you’re not very good at the above exercises! Everyone is encouraged to go at their own pace, but we do challenge you and encourage you to push yourself to reach your full potential.
In a sparring class you will then often be paired up to work through specific techniques, (known as drills) usually using focus pads which your partner (bag man) hold for you. Techniques will build up in complexity starting perhaps with a simple jab and moving onto a jab and reverse punch and more complex combinations of punches, kicks and blocks.
The lesson then moves on to sparring and you will put on the necessary protective gear. For new starters this usually means just boxing gloves as the level of sparring will be very light and kicks will not be used.
By now if you are not sweating then you are not working hard enough but we know that you will be and so we make sure that every class ends with a cool down period to ensure limbs are relaxed and injuries will not occur from overexerting yourself.
Class ends with a bow and respect to the dojo and teacher plus a few good handshakes amongst your fellow members and occasionally we undo the good work by socialising over drinks and food afterwards!
The word ‘sparring’ can sometimes put people off but at Holistic Fitness we make sure everyone is comfortable with the level of contact. Sparring does NOT mean full on fighting and the aim of sparring is not to injure your opponent! However more advanced members may like to push each other further and use more advanced techniques.
In our syllabus classes, the sparring element is replaced with a more focused lesson on the techniques of kickboxing for those who are wishing to work their way through the belt grading system.
Each belt is designed to develop from the basic kicks and punches into effective fighting combinations, but from the outset all the techniques can be used in sparring and self defence scenarios.
Kickboxing is a great way to keep fit but is a very different type of exercise to a gym workout. Kickboxing uses a mix of cardio vascular exercises and short bursts of high intensity. This mixed with stretching and the warm up exercises makes it very effective for burning calories, improving stamina, flexibility and core strength.
One of the most surprising things about Kickboxing is the level playing field it creates. Heavier people find themselves slow when up against lighter opponents while muscular people have the strength but might lack the stamina. Therefore everyone always has a strength they can play on when taking part in Kickboxing.
